Not a surprise, really, considering I was a technical writer in the software industry for 9 years before starting Divine Write.
Since then I’ve written copy for countless software startups and IT consultants, as well as several of the big technology names, including IBM, Telstra and Virgin Broadband. Here’s an example of some of my IT / technology copywriting (click to zoom):
Interestingly, the prerequisite for being good at IT / telecommunications / technology copywriting isn’t what you might think. You don’t have to be technical, and you don’t have to love technology. You just have to not be scared of it, and you have to have an appreciation of how it can help.
I had no interest in technology when I worked as a technical writer. I didn’t develop an interest until I became a copywriter. And that wasn’t because of my client work, it was because I was suddenly without an IT department, and I had to support my entire infrastructure alone. I quickly discovered the joys of effective, intelligent IT (and the pain of the alternative).
Of course, these days I do love technology. I subscribe to technology blogs. I window shop on technology ecomm websites. I love Android, and I have my Nova launcher setup, Tasker profile, wallpaper and notification sounds backed up. I’m thinking of timing my factory resets. I love software and systems. I’ve even developed some software products of my own (I designed the logic and yes, did some of the coding!). I’m fascinated by Linux. I pull computers apart and put them back together, and I have drawers of spare parts I’ll never use. I’ve encrypted my (main) PC’s hard-drive. I use a VPN occasionally and unblock-us constantly. I had to cut this paragraph short.
So yeah, I can see why technology clients come to me for their copywriting!
