Australia’s leading blogger, Darren Rowse (aka ProBlogger), took a test to measure the quality of his writing. But it wasn’t a blog writing test, it was a copywriting test. He scored 85/100 (on this post).
Buy ‘The Copywriting Scorecard for Bloggers’ and see if you can beat him
Darren’s score was determined using a world-first scorecard, developed by him and yours truly. It allows you to objectively measure the quality of your blog posts, from a copywriting point of view, using tried and tested best practices.
You simply read through the book’s recommendations and pitfalls, then use the electronic scorecard to score your post. For each recommendation, select Yes (if you did heed the recommendation in your post) or No (if you didn’t), and the scorecard will automatically calculate your score out of 100. The higher your score, the more effective your post is likely to be.
‘The Copywriting Scorecard for Bloggers’ is a great tool for anyone who wants to improve the quality of their blogging.
Why a copywriting scorecard?
What’s copywriting got to do with blogging? At first glance, they seem worlds apart. But they’re not…
Ask yourself this question: Why do you blog? For most people, the answer is something like:
- “I blog to build my personal brand.”
- “I blog to sell affiliate products.”
- “I blog to lend credibility to my product or service.”
- “I blog to drive traffic to my AdSense ads.”
- “I blog to build my traffic so I can sell ad space.”
- “I blog to attract links so I rank higher on Google.”
Notice a common thread here? Every one of the above answers involves selling. They’re either selling their personal brand, selling affiliate products, selling their own products or services, selling AdSense clicks, selling ad space or selling authority.
So let’s join the dots… Bloggers are people who write to sell stuff. Copywriters are also people who write to sell stuff. Seems to me, there’s very little difference at all.
What’s the ProBlogger Scorecard based on?
‘The Copywriting Scorecard for Bloggers’ provides a list of recommendations to follow, and also some pitfalls to avoid. It’s a checklist of things that are common in most great copywriting, and mistakes that are commonly found in ineffective copy.
All up, there are 63 things to consider, all comprehensively explained, and divided into the following sections:
- Writing – How to write engaging compelling posts.
- Scannability – How to ensure your posts are easy to scan read.
- Search engine optimisation (SEO) – How to write posts that Google will like.
- Grammar – How to avoid errors that undermine your credibility.
Oh, and these recommendations are prefaced by two chapters of writing best practices. General advice on how to deal with the day to day challenges facing anyone who writes for a living (or wants to).
What does it tell you?
While ‘The Copywriting Scorecard for Bloggers’ won’t make you a world-class writer overnight, it’ll certainly nudge you in that direction with each new post you write and score. It’s designed to help you make incremental improvements, and to get you thinking about the individual qualities that work for you and your subscribers.
The important thing is that ‘The Copywriting Scorecard for Bloggers’ is not some high level, dry, theoretical discussion of writing rules. “You can nearly be forgiven for using “its” when it should be “it’s” or “they’re” instead of “their”, but think how stupid you might look. Now, there’s no excuse! The Copywriting Scorecard for Bloggers gives you a sure-fire way to get it right, every time!”

“You’d think being a copywriter would make blogging easy – after all, isn’t it just more words on a page? Wrong. I still get ‘blogger’s block’ as bad as the next person, and I often need a reminder about why I blog in the first place. I’m happy to say that The Copywriting Scorecard for Bloggers gives me a nice package of information that provides some focus to my blogging. I’ll be keeping the scorecard handy for my future posts to make sure I’m on the right track.”

“What I like most about this book is the practical business approach it takes to blogging. The Copywriting Scorecard for Bloggers focuses on the core activities you need to do well in order to have a profitable blog. That is, knowing what actions will improve your business and crafting your blog posts so that readers perform those actions. Being able to tap into Glenn’s 8 years of copywriting experience makes the price of this eBook a steal. For those of us who are blogging for passion AND profit, The Copywriting Scorecard is a must read.”

“This ebook taught me two important and powerful things. First, the simple writing mistakes I didn’t even realise I was making. And second, how to fix them without having to think too hard about it when I write blog posts. Follow the advice in this ebook and in no time you’ll see much stronger responses to your blog posts.”

“As a business owner, everything comes down to ROI for me, including blogging. The ProBlogger Scorecard ebook is the first resource I have seen that has shown us how we can make our blog rise above our competitors’ blogs. Best of all, it is very practical. I made everyone on my editorial team print out 10 copies of the scorecard so they can score their next 10 posts.”

“Of course the scorecard is excellent; it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before. But this ebook is so much more than a scorecard. It’s about the little things you glean that have an impact on the very way you think about blogging and copywriting. And they’re easy to remember because Darren and Glenn delve into not only the why, but the elusive how. Together with loads of examples, nothing is left open to interpretation. You’ll have no excuses left. I certainly don’t. Do you know the best bit? I’m a professional copywriter.”

It includes great tips for best practice copywriting plus plenty of juice to help any blogger improve results. I’ll certainly continue to use both the tips in this book and the scorecard to ensure a three way win: happy blog that gets lots of search engine traffic, happy readers & happy blogger (me!).”

“With this book, it’s virtually impossible not to get your posts perfect. Every time. I followed the Problogger Scorecard from start to finish, and at the end, I had a great post.”

“When I was reading Glenn and Darren’s Copywriting Scorecard for Bloggers I was trying to think of those bloggers who would get the most out of it. I reckon new bloggers who are not sure where or how to start their posts will love this ebook, but I also think experienced bloggers who occasionally find their posts hard to finesse – and, let’s face it, we all have those days – will find some of the advice useful. With lots of practical tips for writing good posts and getting them ranking well on Google, I found this ebook very user-friendly. The guys coach bloggers on everything from identifying their motivation and knowing the elements that make a good post to practical ideas on making the most of keywords. And the best bit – especially for those who are motivated by numbers and hard data – is the scorecard which allows you to score each post against a defined set of criteria. This is the book for bloggers who want a step-by-step plan and the tools to help make their posts shine.”

“I consider myself a fairly experienced blogger after more than four years writing on various subjects, but after reading The Copywriting Scorecard for Bloggers I found myself thinking about ways I could blog better. I can use my blog posts to engage more effectively with my audience, but also improve the way I craft each post by using the copywriting recommendations outlined in the ebook. I used the scorecard to rate a blog that had attracted a lot of comments in the weeks after I posted it and discovered although my writing was good, there was still much I could improve on. Thanks for the the valuable advice Darren and Glenn.”

“I think the book is a fantastic resource, which will help poor writers such as myself become much, much better.”
