I do a lot of finance copywriting. In fact, the finance and insurance industry has delivered more copywriting work for more me than most others. The graph below is my real data (click to zoom):
In the past, I think finance companies singled out formally qualified copywriters when they weren’t getting their copy from an ad agency. But these days, the language used by banks has really loosened up, as they try to position themselves as friends of their customers.
Fortunately, I fit both these requirements quite neatly. I have a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Linguistics and a Master of Arts in International Communication. And I also tend to write in an easy conversational style. So I’ve worked for a few of the big finance names, including Westpac, Commonwealth Bank, Computershare and Wesfarmers.
But you might be surprised to learn that, although the big names do get a lot of copywriting work done, most of my clients in this industry are small to medium businesses. And they tend to be far more challenging than the Westpacs and Wesfarmers. Because the client – the actual person who engages me to do the work – is often the person who’s putting their money, their reputation and their career on the line. Perhaps even their licence to practise. So they’re very specific in their expectations (if not always their instructions). And, quite rightly, they won’t accept anything but perfection. Here’s an example of some of my finance copywriting (click to zoom):
